At Cottonwood Plains, everyone is learning and growing. We are located in Fort Collins, Colorado, and have an annual enrollment of approximately 400 students. Our staff now numbers fifty-three, which includes those in both licensed and classified support positions. Our school is truly unique in that it is nestled in a neighborhood located in Fort Collins, but we are part of the Thompson School District. We have a Loveland telephone number but a Fort Collins address. The areas where we have focused particular attention as a staff include: Literacy, Positive Behavioral interventions and Support (PBiS), Critical Thinking & Problem Solving, instructional strategies, and Professional Learning Communities (PLC).
We offer two types of kindergarten programs, a full-day Spanish Dual Language Immersion program and a full-day traditional kindergarten class. Our students go through 5th grade before transitioning to Middle School. Our school hours are from 8:00 am to 3:10 pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 9:00 am - 3:10 pm Wednesdays. The school office hours are 7:30-3:30 weekdays.
We are currently into our eighth year using the Dual Language Immersion program. The Dual Language Immersion Program is an academic program that enhances the development of content in two languages-English and Spanish, as well as literacy in both languages, so that students will graduate ready for college, career, and life in a globally competitive economy and a collaborative global community. This unique program builds student linguistic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in both English and Spanish. Students learn standards-based content as they become linguistically and academically proficient in two languages.
Our student population is diverse and while our goals are many, we work around the idea of doing whatever is necessary to effectively meet the academic and social-emotional needs of our students. We also strive to build a strong character that will carry students beyond the walls of our school. Our staff seeks constant professional development and has been trained to use best practices in instructional methods to differentiate instruction and meet the individual needs of all learners. We also have a menu of programs to support students that includes Gifted and Talented, Exceptional Student Services, Intensive Reading, Response-to-Intervention/ Instruction support, Counseling, and English Language Development.
In the math area, our district uses Math Expressions. In literacy, grade levels utilize the ReadyGen curriculum. Science is taught using FOSS kits that are hands-on and inquiry-based. Social Studies allows the use of a variety of materials that are grade level and content standards specific. Periodic and frequent checks of progress are also used to help guide our teaching and student learning, and to ensure that all students are responding to our instruction.
Our Cottonwood PTA is outstanding not only in the support that they provide to students and staff, but also by encouraging parents to be involved in their children’s school. They organize and help the following: Open House & Back-to-School Night, Fun & Fitness Day, Family Nights, fundraising, Valentine's Day Parties, Kindergarten Visitation, Fifth Grade Picnic and Celebration, and the Scholastic Book Fair just to name a few.
